Colon Cancer Stem Cells Dictate Tumor Growth and Resist Cell Death by Production of Interleukin-4

A novel paradigm in tumor biology suggests that cancer growth is driven by stem-like cells within a tumor. Here, we describe the identification and characterization of such cells from colon carcinomas using the stem cell marker CD133 that accounts around 2% of the cells in human colon cancer. The CD133(+) cells grow in vitro as undifferentiated tumor spheroids, and they are both necessary and sufficient to initiate tumor growth in immunodeficient mice. Xenografts resemble the original human tumor maintaining the rare subpopulation of tumorigenic CD133(+) cells. First results of a European multi-center registry of patients with anorectal malformations.

Background: The European consortium on anorectal malformations (ARM-NET) was established to improve the health care of patients and to identify genetic and environmental risk factors. The aim of the present study was to present the first results on clinical data of a large European cohort of ARM patients based on our registry. Methods: In 2010, the registry was established including patient characteristics and data on diagnosis, surgical therapy, and outcome regarding complications. Influence of short-term aging on mechanical properties and morphology of polymer-modified bitumen with recycled plastics from waste materials

Polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) is bitumen that has been specifically engineered with polymer for providing enhanced performance in service. The aging of bitumen is a main aspect that is able to affect its final performance: during the production phase in a hot mix plant, all the binders experience short-term aging due to the high processing temperature. The same is true during the production of the modified binder, when the polymer is dispersed at high temperature in the bitumen mass. This paper attempts to solve the problem of searching minimum production order completion time variants by means of stochastic logical structures with all cost curve descent points and corresponding minimum-cost schedules. Measuring Excellence and Equity in Education : Conceptual and Methodological Issues

The text focuses on the measurement problems both equity and excellence does imply, and on the "technical" choices that are to be made. It aims at showing that those choices are not neutral and have plenty of political consequences. Starting with the problems of definition of both excellence and equity, which should be considered jointly, the paper examines i) how the indicators and methods implemented do have some impact on the amount of inequalities, and ii) on the necessity of a time dimension to figure out how inequalities are generated, along with a system-wide perspective.

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a process for direct electricity production from salinity gradients, based on the use of suitable exchange membranes. AbstractGiven knowledge at the time, the recent 2015-2016 zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic probably could not have been predicted. Without the prior knowledge of ZIKV being already present in South America, and given the lack of understanding of key epidemiologic processes and long-term records of ZIKV cases in the continent, the best related prediction was for potential risk of an Aedes-borne disease epidemic. New technologies have radically transformed not only geography as a discipline but also the geographies of the world. Indeed the digital has assumed an increasingly pervasive mediating role in the production of space as of geographic knowledge and imaginaries. The possibilities offered by the virtual in particular now offer a decisive contribution in communicating the meanings attributed to places and respond increasingly effectively to the emerging needs of the tourism sector. Digitally mediated visitor experiences aim to engage the senses and are effective when they promote rigorously realistic immersions. Within the framework of these reflections the paper highlights the renewed relevance of authenticity both of the tourism experience and of cultural heritage in relation to its potential for attraction and proposes a contextualization of the theme in light of the unprecedented opportunities granted by technologies for the creation of virtual and augmented spaces. The proposed discussion is therefore also a journey aimed at exploring authenticity as a tool through which new technologies can effectively mediate a sense of place and foster brand communication of a destination. The case study is the UNESCO site of Tarragona whose most relevant image for urban policies is presented. This shared figuration spatially defined and rooted in a precise historical moment is reconstructed on the one hand through the analysis of functional documentation for the candidacy and on the other by means of a review of mobile applications developed for the promotion of the city's cultural heritage. The proposed journey and exploration of the place return in light of the research data and in conclusion the central role played by digital technologies in mediating the UNESCO imaginary. The forms of virtual tourism in Tarragona confirm that to travel is to experience a text enveloped in time and inscribed in space.Settore M-GGR/01 - Geografia
